Sites for Artists

Artists can benefit from web sites by sharing their portfolio with the world. A web gallery will never replace live viewing, but can inspire people who may never otherwise get to see the work. Properly promoted, a compelling site can lead to new exhibitions, sales and commissions.

An art web site will usually feature one or more galleries, which can take many forms. One way is to provide a thumbnail page, which shows a collection of tiny images. Each image is a button; when clicked, a larger version of the work appears on the page. Another option is to have an animated strip of thumbnails along the bottom, with each large version appearing above as the thumbnails are clicked.

Slideshows are a lively option. Some simply move from image to image automatically, or use buttons to allows the visitor to control them. Slides can transition by cross-fading or sliding into place. See an example of a slideshow on this site.

Artist sites may also include:

  • biography, resumé
  • listing of past exhibitions and upcoming events
  • articles/reviews by and/or about the artist and the work
  • links to representing galleries and agents
  • online sale of original works, prints and merchandise
  • printable brochure
